The HSS/NCH Freestanding Inpatient Orthopedic Hospital stands as a landmark achievement in healthcare construction for Southwest Florida, a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Hospital for Special Surgery and NCH Healthcare System, delivering 104,000 square feet of world-class orthopedic care on the NCH North Naples campus. Completed in April 2025, under budget and in just 22 months, with zero lost-time safety incidents, the $93 million facility sets a new standard across every dimension of the judging criteria.
The three-story facility commands its campus with a modern, patient-centered design that projects both clinical authority and welcoming approachability. The building’s exterior composition, covered drop-off canopy, monument signage, and carefully planned vehicular circulation create an arrival experience that immediately communicates the quality of care within. Constructed directly adjacent to an active Emergency Department and operational helipad, the building’s placement and orientation required precise site planning to achieve both functional and aesthetic cohesion within an already complex campus environment.
The floor-by-floor programming reflects sophisticated thinking about how patients, staff, and visitors move through a specialized orthopedic facility:
– The first floor houses an orthopedic clinic with 22 exam rooms, two radiography rooms, a rehab gym, café, and shell space for a future ambulatory surgical center
– The second floor delivers 15 private acute care beds, 13 observation bays, two isolation rooms, and five fully equipped operating rooms within 33,000 square feet
– The third floor provides a comprehensive radiology suite including MRI, CT, ultrasound, and procedure rooms, plus shell space for future expansion
VDC and BIM coordination allowed full prefabrication of structural, skin, and MEPF systems, eliminating field clashes and accelerating the schedule. TouchPlan lean scheduling and Procore project management ensured trade partner accountability at every phase. The result was a highly complex, fully occupied campus addition delivered on time, under budget, and without a single disruption to active patient care operations.
