Big Island Builders – Hidden Gem

The detail of note here isn’t the room — at about sixteen square feet of pool storage, the space behind the door is modest, and we know it. The special feature is the door, and what it took to make 500 pounds of tile disappear into a wall. This is a true custom build and not a specialty kit that can be ordered and bolted on, and it’s exactly the kind of puzzle we cherish.
The constraint was brutal. The fireplace wall it lives in is clad entirely in three-dimensional ceramic tile in long 48″×24″ strips, and our clients insisted the same heavy tile continue across the face of the door so it would vanish. That handed us two problems at once:
Weight — with tile, framing, and hardware, the finished door runs at least 500 pounds across a custom 3′ × 9′ opening
Geometry — a truly flush hidden door normally only works opening inward, because swinging a flush door outward needs clearance this detail simply doesn’t have
So we designed our way out of it. We had a European manufacturer build a custom two-stage hinge that first carries the door outward, then up — letting a tile-faced door open out while sitting perfectly flush, with a consistent reveal all the way around. The first set of hinges couldn’t carry the load, so we had them re-engineered and remade to handle the weight. There’s no visible hardware to break the tiled plane either; a spring-loaded push latch opens it. You press the wall, and the wall opens.
Because the whole thing lives outdoors near saltwater, we specified every component for the environment — stainless-steel hinges and stainless materials throughout to survive the salt air that would eat ordinary hardware alive. Closed, it reads as nothing at all, just a seamless run of sculptural tile, until it swings open to the storage our clients wanted.
Anyone can drop in a bill pocket or a plug-in panel. But a 500-pound, tile-faced, flush door that opens outward on a hinge built from scratch for this one opening is a different animal — a problem solved.
