Interior Design of the Year – Single Family Homes

Private Residence
$1,000,001 – $1,500,000

This beautiful coastal home was originally a spec home that was eventually bought by a couple from Kansas that uses this a vacation home where they spend time with their kids and grandkids. The project was unique in that the combination of materials selected and incredible millwork make it special. The application of wood detailing is evident in everything from the ceiling designs in all rooms, to the ship lap siding for accent walls in the bedrooms, to the wonderful cabinet and built in designs. Special attention was given to juxtaposition of dark wood stains on knotty alder with the wood painted finishes on pine wood such as the ceiling design. Stone walls as in the great room, and glass tile backsplash in kitchen combine to make an unusual mixture of wonderful materials. These create a warm and inviting environment, lending itself to a coastal rustic flair, yet with hints of au currant design. Very important was my selection process of materials and finishes, as well as the design of everything from cabinetry to crown molding to built-ins and ceiling designs. All flooring selections throughout interior of main house, (including baths), and exterior lanai were carefully made to achieve a feeling of warmth and have functionality. Paint colors and stains were also carefully selected. The main idea was to have a natural, organic feel to create comfort and relaxation. I was asked by builder to partially furnish the interior so I began the process of acquiring furnishings for the most important rooms of the house. Upon installation of these, the house sold and I was contracted by the buyer to complete the remainder of entire interior as well as the lanai. I added additional furniture, window treatments, privacy treatments, accessories, florals and art. The project continued with the flow of coastal design, and evolved into an inviting, relaxing sanctuary for this family. I added personal touches and worked to achieve maximization of space as homeowner wanted the ability to host as many house guests as possible comfortably. ( I did this by adding two sets of custom built bunk beds in the guest bedroom to hold additional guests, twin beds in the pool guest bedroom, and changing the original sofa in the living room to a full sectional ). The husband loves fishing and the family enjoys the outdoors. I purchased furniture for the lanai which maximized their entertainment area, allowing them the ability to fully enjoy the Florida lifestyle. The house is tastefully but simply adorned with art picturing “typical” Florida scenes such as birds, turtles, and an impressive dyptich of a boat in the foyer which sets the mood. Colors reminiscent of Florida and its waters flow throughout. This coastal retreat with breathtaking millwork exudes comfort, style, strength of design, functionality, peace and tranquility! It boasts a great traffic flow. Its furnishings, color coordination and usage of materials create a warm, rich, and inviting interior which create a splendid vacation home that the family truly enjoys on holidays.
