The homeowners’ desire for a flowing open floor plan in main gathering rooms extends to the kitchen. A custom-designed island with a Galley workstation and sink and a separate breakfast bar are the same height as built-in lacquered consoles in the adjoining dining and reception room, providing continuity while visually defining its space. The open aesthetic is also emphasized by the 70-by-30-inch polished natural stone floor shared by the rooms.
Custom cabinetry set into niches along the kitchen’s perimeter was designed to conceal functionality and enhance the home’s contemporary design aesthetic. Refrigerator and freezer are hidden behind white flat panel doors set within a frame of rift-sawn oak and are devoid of hardware except for door pulls on each side of integrated ovens and a TV above. Rift-sawn cabinets are positioned on the fringes of another niche, extend from floor to ceiling and flat doors on the lowest level and glass doors with lighted interior displays near the ceiling. They juxtapose white cabinetry with lighted displays above touch-activated bifold doors and the white ship-lapped stove hood.
A gray glass backsplash behind the glass cooktop features an abstract brick pattern and complements the kitchen’s gray and white quartz countertops. Track lighting with a trio of matte black pendants illuminate the Galley workstation integrated into a floating countertop above cabinetry with white doors set within a rift-sawn frame.
Two contemporary leather stools are placed on each side of the breakfast island’s cantilevering waterfall counter where one side has built-in rift-sawn cabinetry with a Wolf microwave drawer.
Polished nickel faucets and hardware and silver accessories add a reflective gleam.
