We were tasked with turning a dark, drabby condo kitchen into an open concept that provided plenty of light, made better use of the space, and added a view of the Gulf. When cooking and entertaining, our clients felt disconnected from their guests as the kitchen was hidden from the main Living area.
It made sense to include the existing Laundry Room space in the new Kitchen design. This allowed us to design a hidden pantry with full size stackable washer and dryer in the furthest part of the footprint. A dark blue coordinating paint color was used on the back wall to create depth to the space.
With the design obstacles of a large structural column and an electrical panel located in the middle of the room, it was decided that the only options were to embrace the column in the island design and relocate the electrical panel into the unit’s mechanical room. The drywall and framing around the structural column were removed, thus gaining us over 2” of valuable island cabinet space on the kitchen side alone. Relocating the electrical panel required us to core drill the concrete wall separating the mechanical and building’s meter room and run power to the newly located electrical panel. We then re-wired the entire unit and added Control 4 Home Automation system.
With LED lighting located in the newly raised ceilings and under the cabinets, the space continued to feel light and airy at night. Audio speakers were added in the ceiling to help set the mood whether home alone or while entertaining guests. Under cabinet plug molds and slab covered pop up outlets were used in place of traditional outlets. The island countertop was extend into the living space to allow for additional seating.
This well designed Kitchen has been a dream come true for our clients. They now enjoy entertaining their friends and family while enjoying their million dollar view.
