Private Residence
This custom residence marks a dramatic departure from the owners’ existing home, built when Mediterranean architecture was popular and automation was still on the horizon. As former clients, they returned with a challenge – their new home would push the boundaries of solar power and energy efficiency. They wanted to pioneer Tesla Powerwalls in a home with contemporary architecture, a flowing open floor plan and larger outdoor living areas enhanced by expansive windows and an elevated indoor-outdoor connection.
The builder, a leader in innovation and design, was prepared for its first solar-powered home.
A 3D model of the sun determined the best orientation of the 6,000-square-foot home for optimal sun exposure to 78, 380-watt black solar panels. Four Tesla Powerwalls replace a generator with a net-zero goal of storing energy to power the home at night and during storms.
Low-e windows and automated window treatments programmed to close during certain times of the day address heat gain. Dramatic cantilevered roofs with tongue-in-groove ceilings floating above transom windows complement the contemporary architecture while shading windows with the most sun exposure. HVAC zoning reduces energy use in seldom-used rooms.
The architecture features low-pitched rooflines with antique black slate tiles blended with the black solar panels and emphasizes linear elements in its clean lines, windows, integrated landscaping beds and open-slatted awnings in outdoor living areas.
Inside, windows and glass doors extend to the floor, enhancing the contemporary aesthetic and open floor plan. A pivoting entry door opens to a two-story reception room with a ceiling that seems to float above 360-degree transoms and extend to exterior cantilevers. Vertical windows perfectly align with the infinity-edge pool and a reflecting pool pushed to the glass.
The reception room flows to the dining room, kitchen and great room, their spaces defined by custom built-in lacquered consoles. Weiland LiftSlide doors in the great room provide a seamless connection to an expansive covered lanai with a full kitchen and bar, a dining area and fireside living room. Guestrooms and the master bedroom are in private wings.
A study, sun-filled home office, open-air firepit and putting green cater to the owners’ lifestyle.
