Built in the late 1980s, the original kitchen of this three-and-a-half-story villa on the Gulf of Mexico showed its true age – cabinetry hanging from the wall, outdated floral-themed tile on the backsplash repeated as an accent on the tiled stove hood, and space restrained by peninsula cabinetry and a table for two. A full-home renovation opened the kitchen to the adjoining living room and modernized appliances and finishes, which were among the clients’ top goals for the project.
The new open-concept floor plan enhances spaciousness, welcomes more natural light, accommodates a new freestanding island with seating for four and extends the kitchen into the adjacent dining room. Polished horizontal tile flooring the color of sand replaces small tile squares and continues throughout the new spaces, further elevating the open design. White beams add dimension to the formerly flat ceiling while flat-faced cabinetry integrated with soffits create a sleek, contemporary look. The redesign also relocates the sink to the island, provides extra cabinet space and replaces the bulky hood with a streamlined stainless-steel rendition. Neutral backsplash tile with a subtle sheen and accents in contemporary lighting and the mid-century-inspired ferules of dining room chairs add personality.
The palette is warmed by the island’s natural wood tone, the rusticity of counter-height stools with textural woven backs, and the neutral earthy colors of the countertops.
With the transformation of the original dining room into an entertainment lounge, the renovation team relocated dining to the former breakfast nook. As an extension of the kitchen, the redesigned dining room is an elegant space for everyday meals and entertaining with a built-in floating console, a tray ceiling and floor-to-ceiling windows.
A complete remodel, the new kitchen accomplishes the clients’ goals for improved functionality, upgraded appliances and finishes, and living spaces accommodating adult children and future generations as a vacation home.
