Private Residence

This 5,784 square foot private residence in the Mediterra community of Naples was transformed from a lackluster space into a French Provincial showstopper. The original design, though functional, appeared utilitarian. The designer created a welcoming environment with a soft, inviting color palette and warm wood elements.

The open kitchen, with its proximity to the entry, is the initial introduction to and hub of this home. Artisan crafted, wire brushed alder planks in a custom stain were inset between existing ceiling beams. Cabinetry, sophisticated yet simple in profile, is embellished by antique glass that reveals mercury glass mirror with LED lighting. Hand made, individually dipped backsplash tiles produce an undulating effect of symmetry and depth without complicating the design. The pantry was enlarged by borrowing from the adjacent laundry room and cleverly disguised with a 6 panel door inset with obscuring rain glass to add intrigue to an otherwise ordinary feature. A dry bar recessed into a nook under the window is a seamless transition to the cabinetry and, juxtaposed to the great room, incorporates two functions within the same space as an extension of both areas.

The reproduction dining table in oak driftwood finish is reminiscent of French countryside living while the elegant frosted, crystal beaded chandelier in antique gold suspended above evokes the style of stately manor homes built by French aristocrats. The host and hostess chairs upholstered in a classic stripe paired with Louis XVI leather side chairs are the epitome of impeccable beauty and comfort.

In the great room, handmade wood beams in a rich chocolate finish span the lofty ceiling in a balance of light and dark elements. The French reproduction chandelier plays off the brass and marble cocktail table. Bergere chairs in rich leather and warm wood finish harmonize with weathered whites and soothing greige. A neutral, soft wool area rug in raised trellis pattern anchors the seating area.

The powder bath is bedecked in a stunning, overscale metallic gold and charcoal damask patterned wallpaper that surrounds the French style vanity with artful free form sink.

A large arched opening to the stairwell in the leisure was reduced to create additional wall space for a sofa, maximizing utilization of the room while still providing a glimpse of the ornate iron balustrade.

The welcoming master is furnished with a reproduction bed and bench that exemplify the understated ambiance of a French country cottage. Demilune nightstands in a painted finish and antique gilded mirrors above add a touch of color and depth to the room. Tucked away in a cozy corner, the French wingback chair beckons.

In the master bath, an outdated arched header and built in tub deck were removed to open up the space and capitalize on the light streaming in through the wall of windows. A free standing iron tub and new shower clad in a large mosaic of calacatta gold and white thassos marble bestow an elegant air to this French Provincial chic transformation.
