The initial call from these clients came during COVID, while they were still living in California. They purchased the home site-unseen and initially hired the Designer to select paint colors and furnishings. Following a site-visit the Designer reported back to the clients, and the consensus was to do a full remodel. The inspiration was to honor the American Empire style Architecture while juxtaposing modern elements and furnishings.

The Clients loved the Library in the home, with it’s floor to ceiling bookcases and fireplace. They requested to have a Partner’s Desk by the French Doors, so that they could enjoy looking out to the enclosed patio while they were working. The original patio felt dated and featured an abundance of crema-marfil and terracotta. There was an eye-sore and not any particular design style, but the space felt more South-western than anything else. Architecturally, the space was limiting and an interesting challenge for the Designer.

Standing in the Library and looking out the French Doors the Designer visualized an opportunity to design a beautiful focal point for the Clients when they are sitting at their desk. Taking time to determine an aesthetic unique to the home, the Designer had a revelation. Drawing inspiration from a lush Zen Garden, a 10’ high water wall was designed for visual interest and to add the sound of gently cascading water. Lush greenery was planted above the wall to obstruct the view of the neighbors home. Black Japanese pebbles, Epi Planks and towering Bamboo add an organic element to the garden. A bench by Bernhardt for sitting and contemplation (which the husband shared that he enjoys taking time to do), and authentic Buddha complete the perfect outdoor Zen Garden. The Clients favorite part of their newly remodeled home!
